About Climate Change and GHG Offsets
About climate change
"The scientific community has reached a strong consensus regarding the science of global climate change. The world is undoubtedly warming. This warming is largely the result of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities including industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion, and changes in land use, such as deforestation.
Continuation of historical trends of greenhouse gas emissions will result in additional warming over the 21st century, with current projections of a global increase of 2.5ºF to 10.4 ºF by 2100, with warming in the U.S. expected to be even higher... With warming will also come additional sea-level rise that will gradually inundate coastal areas, changes in precipitation patterns, increased risk of droughts and floods, threats to biodiversity, and a number of potential challenges for public health."

About greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets
"One tangible way businesses and individuals can take action on climate change is to become carbon neutral (or even carbon negative). This involves first reducing energy use wherever possible, and then purchasing what are known as 'carbon offsets' (or 'GHG offsets') to mitigate any remaining greenhouse gas emissions.
...A GHG offset is an emission reduction credit from another organization's project that results in less carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than would otherwise occur. Offsets are typically measured in tons of CO2-equivalents and are bought and sold through a number of international brokers and online retailers.
...Many types of activities can generate offsets. Renewable energy installations can create carbon offsets by displacing fossil fuels. Other types of offsets include those resulting from energy efficiency projects, methane capture from landfills or livestock, destruction of potent greenhouse gases such as halcarbons, and carbon sequestration projects (such as reforestation) that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere."
